Western influence in the Caucasus has been in sharp decline for a decade. Among the three independent states of the Caucasus the feeling of western disengagement runs deep.

This forum introduced CACI's new publication A WESTERN STRATEGY FOR THE SOUTH CAUCASUS. This Silk Road Paper recounts western missteps in the region, explains why the Caucasus matter, and called for a fresh approach to the region as a whole and the three independent states that comprise it.

Putin's Kosovo Card: Its Meaning to Eastern Europe, Caucasus, and Central Asia

President Putin of Russia frequently claims that Kosovo created a precedent, allowing Russian military intervention in separatist areas of the former Soviet Union, recognition of Abkhazian and South Ossetian independence, and annexation of Crimea.

Is Putin justified in this claim? If yes, does this change the way we view the situation today? And if not, what can be done about it? Our forum will address these questions in the context of the Caucasus, Central Asia, and relevant parts of eastern Europe.

The Impact of Falling Oil Prices and Russian Sactions in Central Asia/Caucasus

Falling oil prices deeply affect oil-producing countries in Central Asia and the Caucasus. In addition, sanctions against Russia impact these countries indirectly. Also, Russia's economic crisis has reduced remittances sent home to Central Asia and the Caucasus by laborers working in Russia. Taken together, these factors create new economic and political dynamics in the region.

Our forum will discuss these new dynamics and their short- and long-term implications for the countries of Central Asia and Caucasus.
