2016 CAMCA Regional Forum to be Held in Tbilisi, Georgia, June 17^th-19^th 

Regional meeting fostering an exchange of ideas on key issues throughout the Greater Central Asia region

Washington, D.C. — The 2016 CAMCA (Central Asia-Mongolia-Caucasus-Afghanistan) Regional Forum will be held on June 17^th-19^th in Tbilisi, Georgia, hosted by the Rumsfeld Foundation in partnership with the Central Asia-Caucasus Institute at Johns Hopkins University. Over a three-day meeting, international and regional leaders across all sectors will convene to explore key issues, opportunities and challenges facing the CAMCA region.

The 3^rd annual CAMCA Regional Forum will discuss ongoing developments in the region as well as outlooks on broader global trends. The Forum will consist of plenary sessions, keynote addresses and a variety of panels on topics including recent geopolitical and economic developments, intraregional trade and transport, business and investment opportunities in the region, regional security issues and much more.

The CAMCA Regional Forum is a non-political and non-partisan entity established to promote region-wide discussions on means of advancing economic growth and development in Greater Central Asia (Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan).  It promotes this goal by fostering dialogue and interaction among rising young leaders from various sectors in the 10 countries of the region, as well as with international leaders and stakeholders.

The CAMCA Regional Forum has evolved out of the Rumsfeld Fellowship Program at the Central Asia-Caucasus Institute at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies, which has been bringing talented leaders from the region to Washington, D.C. since 2008.  As of June 2016, over 145 professionals will have completed the Fellowship.

CACI FORUM

Revolt in Central Asia:
The Cataclysm of 1916

Wednesday, June 8, 2016, from 5 to 7 p.m.

A century ago, at the time of World War I, hundreds of thousands of Central Asians – Kazakhs, Tajiks, Turkmen, Uzbeks, and above all Kyrgyz – perished when they revolted against the tsarist Russian government's attempt to draft them into the army. Besides those who were killed outright, tens of thousands of Kyrgyz men, women, and children died trying to escape over treacherous mountain passes into China.

Soviet authorities have long suppressed Information on the 1916 revolt, but its Centennial has generated fresh interest, marked by seminars, mass meetings, and publications. Russia, in the meantime, has closed relevant archives and offered the curious thesis that the revolt was actually directed not against Russian rule, but against the authority wielded by the indigenous Turkic bourgeoisie.

The Central Asia-Caucasus Institute marks the centennial of the tragic loss of Central Asian life with two major publications: a new edition of the book The Revolt of 1916 in Russian Central Asia by Edward Dennis Sokol, with foreword by Dr. S. Frederick Starr (JHU Press); and a Silk Road Paper entitled Central Asia in Revolt: the Cataclysm of 1916, edited by Zamira Sydykova. Both of these publications will be presented and discussed at this forum.
